During our time off last week, I took the kids apple picking in North Georgia. We returned home with a peck of apples and lots of ideas about how to use them, including my favorite Peanut Butter Apple Dip.
A peck, in case like me you didn’t know, is 10 – 12 pounds of apples. I’d estimate that we came home with around 25 of them.
Have you ever been apple picking? It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and we finally had the time. Before heading into the orchard, we got a little apple picking tutorial – lift the apple up, twist, and then gently pull. The kids got the hang of it pretty quickly and managed to fill our peck-sized bag (minus the “special” apples they insisted on holding in their hands) in about 30 minutes.
We picked Rome Beauty and Golden Delicious apples, so we had a beautiful mixture of red and green apples. The Golden Delicious apples at the store are always yellow, but the ones we picked are green, more like a Granny Smith apple.
After picking, we each chose an apple and ate it on a bench underneath a ceiling fan (it might be September, but it was starting to get hot, even at 11 am). My daughter lost her first tooth before school started and figured out quickly that the next loose tooth got looser when biting into an apple.
Once we were in the car headed home with our peck of apples, I realized I had to figure out what to do with them all. We made this Homemade Applesauce recipe from Yummy Mummy Kitchen, one of my favorite bloggers. The most difficult part was peeling and chopping the apples because the slow cooker did the rest of the work. So good!
One of my favorite things to eat with apple slices is peanut butter dip with candy pieces. This is a recipe I got from one of my friends that has been made many, many times. It’s so good that I have to stop myself from eating it straight from the container with a spoon.
This dip is as simple as it is tasty. You need an 8 ounce brick of cream cheese, a little milk, and a cup each of peanut butter, brown sugar, and candy pieces. I chose fall colored M&Ms. The first time I had this dip, my friend made it with Heath bar pieces. I’ve also made it with chocolate chips. Pick your favorite candy and mix it in!
This dip is perfect for a fall party, tailgating, or just as a lunch box treat.
Check back on Thursday for more delicious apple recipes!
- 8 apples, cut into slices
- ½ c lemon juice (to prevent browning)
- 1 8 oz. packing of cream cheese (I used ⅓ less fat)
- 1 c peanut butter
- 1 c light brown sugar, packed
- ¼ c milk
- 1 c candy pieces
- Core and cut your apples into slices. After cutting, place them into a bowl and pour the lemon juice over the top. Pat dry and place on a serving plate.
- In the bowl of a mixer, beat together the cream cheese, peanut butter, brown sugar, and milk until smooth.
- Stir in the candy pieces.
